About NFL Disability Benefits (Total & Permanent Disability Benefits)

As covered by the Bert Bell/Pete Rozelle NFL Player Retirement Plan you may be entitled to receive Total & Permanent Disability benefits if you have "a substantial impairment which has persisted for 12 months or is expected to persist for 12 months that would prevent you from working for any remuneration or profit."

 

You may qualify for Total & Permanent Disability based upon orthopedic impairments, psychiatric impairments (depression, anxiety, mood swings, anger, and/or suicidal thoughts) and/or cognitive impairments. 

 

​​Below are some details regarding NFL Total & Permanent Disability claims taken directly from the NFLPA:

ACTIVE FOOTBALL

 

Benefit provided if you are disabled as a result of NFL football activities and shortly thereafter results in a total and permanent disability (unable to work at any occupation). 
$265,000 per year 

 

ACTIVE NON-FOOTBALL
 

Benefit provided if your disability does not result from football activities but does arise while an active player and results in a total and permanent disability. 
$165,000 per year 

 

INACTIVE A

 

Benefit provided for you if you are a vested player who becomes disabled from football activities and this results in a total and permanent disability before 15 years after your last Credited Season. 
$135,000 per year 

 

INACTIVE B

 

Benefit provided for you if you are a vested player who becomes disabled from football activities and this results in a total and permanent disability after 15 years after your last Credited Season. 
$60,000 per year
